Maxillofacial surgery, which most people know as oral surgery, is a dental specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of dental issues correctable by surgery. Dr. M. Shoaib Khan uses oral surgery to treat the aesthetics and functionality of the teeth, mouth, face, and jaws. His goals are to help patients overcome congenital oral defects, preserve diseased or decayed teeth, control and reverse serious dental diseases, and minimize the damage from accidental injuries.
General dentists, pediatric dentists, and orthodontists often refer patients to Arlington Heights dentist Dr. Khan for further evaluation and treatment. You should always consult an oral surgeon for any disease or injury involving the facial area.

Some of the specific duties of an oral surgeon include:
- Removing impacted and diseased teeth through surgical means after first administering general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Root canals and the removal of wisdom teeth are common procedures.
- Setting a broken jaw, repairing facial lacerations, re-connecting severed nerves, repairing damage to the nose and eye sockets, and correcting several other problems caused by facial trauma.
- Handling all aspects of dental implants, including placing the artificial tooth roots, performing a bone graft if necessary, and attaching the replacement teeth to their new roots. Since the process can take several months to complete, oral surgeons examine patients for progress and advise them on the next steps
- Diagnosing and treating facial pain, such as that caused by temporomandibular joint disorders. Dr. Khan may refer patients to a physical therapist or another medical specialist prior to recommending surgery. He usually asks the patient to try several home remedies as well.
- Performing all types of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
- Performing surgery for the correction of sleep apnea when more conservative treatment efforts have failed.
Educational Requirements for Oral Surgeons
To earn certification as a diplomate from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a dentist must graduate from an accredited dental college as well as be licensed to practice dentistry in the state where he or she practices. Additionally, a diplomate in oral surgery must complete a minimum of four years of training in a maxillofacial residency program based in a hospital.
Dr. Khan has earned his diplomate, as well as his fellowship and mastership, at the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. This is the largest organization in the world dedicated to training dentists to perform dental implant surgery. Other fellowship and mastership programs include the Scottsdale (Arizona) Center for Dentistry and the Misch International Implant Institute.
