Tooth Sensitivity: It’s Causes and Treatment

Tooth Sensitivity has become a common issue among the population. Here are some of the causes of tooth sensitivity and what you can do to help treat this issue.

Brushing Technique

Always remember brush gently in a circular motion. The tips of the bristles is what removes all the plaque there is no need to press down and add excess force. Always make sure to use a soft-bristled brush. A medium or hard bristled brush is too abrasive on the enamel of the teeth & gum tissue.

Acidic Foods

The acid in certain foods and drinks breakdown and weaken your enamel which later leads to sensitivity. Avoid eating foods with lime/lemon, tomato sauce, grapefruits, kiwis, etc. If you also suffer from gum recession these types of foods will only increase your tooth sensitivity.

Grinding teeth

Many of us grind our teeth at night and don’t even realize it. When we grind our teeth over long periods of time we end up wearing down our enamel and exposing the second layer of the tooth known as Dentin (middle layer of the tooth that leads to your nerves) which is highly more sensitive. Using a custom made night guard can help reduce the wear tear and prevent your teeth from becoming sensitive.

Gum Disease

Gum disease eats away at the bone structure around your teeth which leads to gum recession. This is caused by excessive plaque, tartar, and bacteria. Exposure of the roots can cause severe sensitivity to hot & cold.

Decayed Teeth

Old fillings weaken and can break or leak overtime. Leakage allows bacteria to accumulate and acid to build up which can lead to tooth decay and sensitivity. This can be easily fixed by replacing the old filling and covering up the exposed areas.

So if you’re suffering from tooth sensitivity you can try using a fluoride-based toothpaste and a fluoride mouthwash. If these over-the-counter remedies do not help and your sensitivity persists schedule an appointment with your Dentist to have a proper evaluation. There are in office treatments that can be done to help with the sensitivity.
