If you have a slight imperfection in one or more of your teeth, it can affect you more than you realize. You don’t smile as readily as you might otherwise and the problem can make it more challenging to care for your oral health. Whether your issue is stained, cracked, chipped, or misaligned teeth, porcelain veneers are a simple solution to enhance the appearance of your smile. Porcelain veneers fit over the top of a tooth. They are also useful for disguising large gaps between your teeth.
Why Porcelain Makes an Ideal Veneer
Dr. M. Shoaib Khan of Arlington Heights, Illinois uses porcelain veneers because this material creates strength and resilience similar to the enamel of your natural teeth. Compared to other types of materials used to create dental veneers, porcelain appears the most natural. Before Dr. Khan places your veneer, you can select one that matches the shape and shade of your existing teeth most closely. Porcelain veneers blend in so seamlessly that others won’t be able to tell that you have had a cosmetic dentistry procedure performed.
A Simple Process
The first step in getting porcelain veneers is to come to Dr. Khan’s office for a consultation. You then need to return for two separate appointments to receive your veneers. During the first session, Dr. Khan removes up to one-eighth of a millimeter of tooth enamel to ensure that your new porcelain veneer fits properly. He then measures the tooth receiving the veneer and provides this information to our dental laboratory.
Our office will contact you once the lab has returned your customized dental veneers. This typically takes about two weeks. When you come in for the second appointment, Dr. Khan places a dental adhesive on your tooth and then sets the veneer on top of it. Lastly, he shines a dental laser on the tooth so the veneer hardens and remains permanently affixed. With proper attention to oral hygiene and avoiding unnecessary risks, your porcelain veneer should remain in place for up to 10 years.
